Noah Surf House
Located so close to the water, the inspiration at Noah Surf House is the Ocean, and their motto is ‘At the Ocean we’re home’. If you are looking to relax and enjoy an amazing sunset, or if you want a more active stay, you are at the right place. Activities like Surf, Yoga, Skate, Stand Up Paddle, Liquid Balance, Trekking or Functional Training make a regular day at the Noah. The rooms have windows facing the ocean so everyone staying at Noah can enjoy the beautiful view to the fullest.
Noah Surf House can be found in Santa Cruz, almost 1.5 hours north of Lisbon, 100 meters from Praia do Centro. Besides accommodation it counts with a restaurant, free private parking, an outdoor swimming pool heated by solar panels, a bar, an outdoor jacuzzi, organic vegetable garden, surf school, functional training and yoga studios, skate park and a fully equipped kitchen to share with other travellers.
Noah is a place of Peace, Sun and Joy. A Pure place that celebrates the waves and the Ocean! The rooms and bungalows do not have air conditioning, as Noah stands for and values clean air and sea breeze. Following their sustainability policy aerothermal energy is used to heat the floor. All accommodation types are non-smoking.
More info on sustainable practices carried out by Noah Surf House:
Aware of the fact that both hotel and restaurant activities are heavy consumers of many resources as well as waste generators, Noah Beach House and Noah Surf House have environmental and sustainability policies aiming at reducing the ecological footprint, through a process of environmental and social performance’s improvement. And so, we have already implemented a set of measures aiming at greater energy efficiency and a water/waste management policy to gradually reduce the amount of waste produced (bellow)
What do you do to reduce waste in your facility?
Different containers to select and separate the waste produced.
Composting station that allows the usage of organic waste, produced internally, transformed into organic compost without pesticides used as a natural fertilizer on our organic garden. The same garden will grow vegetables and aromatic herbs for both Noah’s restaurant and surf house kitchens.
Abolishment of every disposable plastic object, for instance, the straws.
Our napkins are made of compostable paper.
Reuse of some materials and objects as decoration pieces and furniture which, otherwise, would be considered as trash (upcycling).
What other sustainable measures are applied at your facility (e.g. energy and water saving, use of less disposables, use of organic cleaning materials etc.)?
Energy:
- Solar panels that generate 70% of the water heating needs (showers and taps). When that need is fulfilled and guaranteed, the energy generated by the same solar panels is redirected to heat the pool (during Summer) and/or radiant pavement (during Winter);
- Heat pumps with high energetic efficiency, used for radiant pavement (first heating option, being the solar panels a complement);
- Led illumination;
- Washing machines and refrigerators with highest energetic efficiency (this aspect has much relevance as most of hotels choose not to invest in more expensive, but higher efficiency, equipment).
Water:
- Flow reducers that guarantees 4-6 l/min in every water tap and 6-8 l/min in every shower;
- Rainwater harvesting system that redirects water to a well, to be used in toilet flushing, garden watering and washing; - Delivering of Noah’s Welcoming Kit to every Guest, which contains a 24 Bottle made out of aluminium, which can be refillable with filtered water in different hotel areas.
- The plants chosen for our Garden are autochthonous (local) and do not need watering.
Transversal Measures:
- Monitoring system of resources’ consumptions (water, electricity and gas) in many Surf House’s areas; - Sustainability training is given to our workers;
- Sustainability policies;
- Seasonal menus with local and organic ingredients whenever possible;
- Encouragement next to our guests to do hiking trails and go preferentially on foot or by bicycle, around Santa Cruz. - Development of activities related with sustainability, like beach clean ups, with our guests.
Construction:
- Reuse of the existent old Wall, avoiding the construction of, at least, one new;
- Usage of cork as a thermic insulation;
- Garden roof tops with autochthonous (local) plants, which contribute to each building’s climatization.
Do you encourage and facilitate recycling? Oh yes! There are recycling stations on every office/ work space – meant for staff, as well as a bigger one at the lobby/restaurant/bar to encourage guests to do it as well.
Do you offer other sustainable services to your guests/clients?
Our activities and sports follow our sustainable principle as much as possible, for sure! Both our restaurants (Beach house and Surf house) use everything that grows on the garden (even though it is not enough, nothing goes to waste). Most our activities with guests are related to the ocean, the outdoors, the sports, the land, the garden, the animals… here are some examples:
DIRTY HANDS: Watching is not enough, one must touch, feel and get involved! Especially for the little ones, who are also the most curious, we invite them to get their hands to work. More than a guided tour, they get to plant or sow on the organic garden. Literally get their hands dirty!
TO THE RHYTHM OF THE CHICKENS: We invite you to discover our vegetable garden. What grows on the garden, how does the composting circuit work, what is our chickens’ role, how to take care of the chickens and collect their eggs… with the help of our gardener, know more about the organic garden’s essence.
Trekking
Surf
Stand Up Paddle
Bicycle rid
Skate
What else do you do to minimize your environmental impact?
We have chickens with leading roles on our Composting process, as they take part in a closed feeding cycle which makes that process better and faster. What does this mean? Our chickens feed the compost with their dung, the dung feeds warms and other small insects, small insects feed the chickens! During their stay we invite our guests to pay a visit to our hen house and organic garden (activities explained above). Green beans, chioggia beets, parsley, basil, kale and tagete are some of the cultures we grow.
